A well written blog with relevant, worthwhile content can do wonders for your business! No really, it can.

Blogging has been around for many years, but as social media develops and becomes endemic in businesses, having a company blog is a necessity. It helps hugely with SEO and should be written with keywords and titles in mind. Search engines love fresh content and Google in particular uses its search algorithms to index blogs meaning it can boost your company up the Google rankings.

More importantly blogging is a way of giving your brand a public face. You’re stepping out from behind your desk and reaching out to new and existing clients and proclaiming yourself as an expert in your field.

Ideally you should plan content in advance – tied in with maybe a new product launch or a good news story etc – let as many people as possible know that you have started a blog. Twitter is great for this and almost expected so don’t worry about promoting yourself. Also promote it through your company website and ask current customers and contacts to comment on the blog posts your write. This way you’ll build a community and have interaction that wouldn’t normally have happened without being cold called beforehand!

Here are my top five tips;

  • Keep content fresh and up to date.
  • Write about your area of specialism.
  • Keep posts short, approx. 300 words & use bullet points.
  • Promote, promote, promote – on your website, via Twitter, Facebook, Email signature strip.
  • Plan content in advance and blog frequently.
